Best of 2017

Wow, only 22 freakin movies in 2017, and only FOUR of them weren't documentaries! Unreal. That's less than half of last year and down from 100 movies a year a few years ago. I used to practically never watch any TV series but now TV series make up a lot of my viewing. We watched every episode of Red Dwarf from Series I through Series XII, Sherlock, all the Vikings series, the Last Kingdom, Shetland, and a bunch more, blah blah blah... It's not just having a kid that cut down the actual film consumption. Now I know how few I actually watch I need to make sure each on really counts in 2018.

Read 14 books, which while that's a decline, it's not bad considering the balancing act of raising a toddler, working, being a husband, lifting, and playing music.

Best of 2016

The last three years in a row have seen me watch about 50 movies per year and read about 25 books. The high was in 2012 when I watched 100 movies. I actually thought I'd slowed down since last year, but I'm right where I was. 51 movies and 23 books. I think the bigger swing was the percentage of documentaries. I watched 34 this year.

Here's my run down of my favorites. I'd say that The Hateful Eight was in a whole other league as far as fiction goes. Hands down the best movie all year. And Oasis: Supersonic was one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long, long time. So those two are huge stand-outs for me. And yes, I think the Complete Chronicles of Conan is better than the Lord of the Rings. Sorry, but I know which one I'd bring on a desert island with me, and there are no Hobbits in it.

It was a really good year for music, imo. The first seven albums I listed are fucking awesome!!!

Top 5 Movies:

The Hateful Eight
Cool Hand Luke
Le Mans
Oasis: Supersonic
Bury Me an Angel

Tally this year is 52 films and 25 books and comics. More literature, but only half the amount of movies I've watching in the past. That's just how it goes. Been really busy with Temple of Void, I guess. Didn't really stay current. Almost everything I watched was released prior to 2014. Quality over quantity.

Best of 2013

I read a shockingly small amount of books this year. I was reading a lot of periodicals, and with tearing my ACL, getting surgery, starting a new band, buying and selling houses, etc...I just haven't had that much freakin time for film and books! Anyway, here are my lists. Honestly a bit anti-climactic for 2013.

Richard Branson: Losing My Virginity
The Conqueror Worms
Panther Baby
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
The 4-Hour Work-Week

Top 5 comics I read in 2013:

Song of the year:
Anathema: Untouchable Parts 1 AND 2.

Top 3 albums I procured in 2012 that came out prior:
Black Mountain - Wilderness Heart
Eddie Vedder - Into the Wild Soundtrack
the Prodigy - Experience

I'm as shocked as anyone that I'd pick Converge as the best album of the year...but god damn, just listen to it. The production rips your head off. It's so clear, but so raw and visceral. The layout is awesome, too. The songs are super eclectic. They're relentless. Catchy. Brutal. Technical but accessible. For a band that I thought sucked for 20 years or so...the last two albums are brilliant.
